Inglewood club swims ahead

The Inglewood Swimming Club is growing in confidence thanks to a grant from TET.

The Inglewood Swimming Club was very grateful to receive $4,260 of funding from the Taranaki Electricity Trust to assist in pool hire costs.

“This enabled our club to be able to offer our Inglewood families discounted swimming lessons,” said President Denise Cadman. “This season for a $150 subscription fee, a swimmer could attend lessons twice a week, with an additional club night, so effectively 3 nights of swimming per week for 14 weeks at under $4 a time (including pool entry).  This is so much cheaper than any other swimming club or lessons provider.”

The reduced fees made swimming lessons achievable for more in the community, Cadman added. “We also have a great group of volunteer coaches and committee members who give of their time to enable the Club to provide the services we do.”

The skills learned from swimming and water safety cannot be underestimated.

“Part of our lessons program focuses on water safety (what to do in adverse situations in the water). On average each year we see 8-10 swimmers move up from learn to swim to squad. Five have already moved up this year. At this level they are confident swimmers.”

Club nights at Inglewood is where swimmers get to test out their skills, both technique and distance, with the goal to achieve a personal best time.  “One of the greatest things to see is when a swimmer achieves a new distance goal which really lifts their confidence.” At the most recent club night, 10 swimmers challenged themselves over 400m. “Our youngest swimmers who completed the 400m were only 8-10 years old, so a great achievement for them.”
