Project represents a significant enhancement for the community

The Whakapakari te Kāinga project at Urenui Pā represents a significant, iwi-led investment in the renewal of Ngāti Mutunga’s cultural home — strengthening its ability to support whānau, uphold tikanga, and serve as a central gathering place for generations to come. Through a combination of rebuilding, upgrades, and new spaces, the project has enhanced the overall functionality, safety, and resilience of the pā, ensuring it remains fit for purpose while retaining its cultural integrity.

As part of this wider programme, the Taranaki Electricity Trust (TET) provided funding toward the development of the Whānau Room within Te Aroha, a key addition that enhances how the marae can care for and support people. This space strengthens manaakitanga by providing a dedicated area for rest, connection, and whānau engagement, particularly during times of high use such as tangihanga and major hui. It complements the broader redevelopment by improving the flexibility and usability of Te Aroha while remaining grounded in the values of the iwi.

For Ngāti Mutunga uri, this investment contributes directly to a stronger, more connected marae environment, said Chairperson Brent Matuku. "It supports cultural practice, intergenerational learning, and a renewed sense of belonging to Urenui Pā," Matuku said. "At the same time, the enhanced facilities benefit the wider community across north Taranaki, reinforcing the pā as an inclusive and valued space for gatherings, events, and shared experiences. Together, the Whakapakari project and TET’s contribution demonstrate how targeted funding can enable meaningful, lasting outcomes for both iwi and the communities they serve."
